Press Release

Today, Administrator Samantha Power joined Prime Minister of the Republic of Kosovo Albin Kurti and Minister of Economy Artane Rizvanolli to announce Kosovo's first-ever solar auction.

This launch event is an important milestone as Kosovo takes steps to decarbonize through competitive, private sector-led market solutions that increase its long-term energy security and sustainability. The renewable 100 megawatt energy auction can power over 20,000 homes with clean energy and will be conducted in an open and transparent manner, providing significant opportunities for private sector investors and energy developers to contribute to Kosovo’s ambitious renewable energy generation targets.

During the launch, Administrator Power said, “We have seen this incredibly strong and important commitment from Kosovo’s leaders to begin an energy transformation – one that I hope can serve as a model for other nations embarking on similar journeys.”

The Administrator also noted Kosovo’s commitment to the EU-aligned, newly enacted 10-year National Energy Strategy to achieve a 35 percent share of renewable energy generation by 2031.

To support the global effort to reduce greenhouse emissions, USAID is working to advance Kosovo’s transition to clean energy by spurring investment in large- and small-scale renewable energy options. USAID is also supporting Kosovo’s efforts to enhance regional energy market integration and build resilience in the energy sector. These efforts not only bolster Kosovo’s energy sector, they also contribute to increased regional integration and security.
