Today, Administrator Samantha Power met with members of the Lebanese diaspora community, in a forum hosted by the American Task Force on Lebanon (ATFL), to share observations and discuss USAID’s ongoing efforts in Lebanon following her recent visit to the country. Edward M. Gabriel, former U.S. Ambassador to the Kingdom of Morocco and current President and CEO of ATFL moderated the virtual discussion.
Administrator Power emphasized the importance of the U.S.-Lebanese relationship and USAID’s support to the Lebanese people impacted by the country’s ongoing economic and humanitarian crises. She discussed USAID’s efforts to alleviate food insecurity in the region, which has been exacerbated by Russia’s war on Ukraine. She also spoke to USAID’s efforts to expand higher education opportunities for Lebanese and refugee students. The Administrator reiterated her calls for Lebanese leaders to implement critical reforms needed to secure funding through the IMF program, which are vital to Lebanon’s economic recovery.
The Administrator shared her belief that the Lebanese diaspora can play a critical role in addressing the current crisis in Lebanon. She reiterated USAID’s commitment to collaborate with the Lebanese-American community to address the country’s humanitarian and development challenges and help the Lebanese people overcome the current hardships.
