Today, Administrator Samantha Power met with Nepal Finance Minister Janardan Sharma and representatives from the Government of Nepal to discuss the country’s democratic gains, economic development, and the impact of rising food and fuel prices on Nepalese families.

Administrator Power recognized Nepal for its democratic progress, and reaffirmed USAID’s commitment to continuing our partnership to strengthen democracy, transparency in financial management systems and counter corruption. She encouraged Nepal to continue making notable strides as a leading democracy in the region, inclusive of its vibrant communities.

Administrator Power affirmed USAID’s continued support to Nepal, and noted the Agency’s recent contribution of $15 million in food security assistance that will help support farmers and vulnerable communities affected by rising prices and food shortages. The funding will help provide nutritious food for children under the age of five and pregnant women.

Administrator Power and Minister Sharma also discussed the importance of preparing vulnerable communities for the impacts of climate shocks and bolstering Nepal’s disaster risk mitigation and climate adaptation plans.
