Today, Administrator Power met with Tanaka Akihiko, President of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). President Tanaka and Administrator Power reaffirmed their commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific, and identified potential areas of development cooperation in the Philippines, Central Asia, and the Pacific Islands. They also discussed key priorities at the upcoming 79th United Nations General Assembly, including progress toward achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, as well as advancing collaboration on lead mitigation efforts, and working with countries that are part of USAID’s Democracy Delivers initiative. 

Administrator Power and President Tanaka highlighted partnership opportunities to support the new Feed the Future Accelerator to increase investment in Africa and Partnership for Global Infrastructure (PGI) initiatives. Administrator Power and President Tanaka underscored development’s critical role in the U.S.-Japan alliance, and recognized the importance of the trilateral development and humanitarian assistance partnership between Japan, the Republic of Korea, and the United States.
