Deputy Assistant Administrator Claire Ehmann joined the Bureau for Democracy, Human Rights, and Governance in June 2024. Her DRG portfolio includes Civil Society, Labor, and Media; Global Trends and Technology; and Elections and Political Processes. Claire returns to USAID after serving most recently as the Deputy Associate Administrator for International Trade at the Small Business Administration.
As a member of the Senior Executive Service since 2018, Claire has over 25 years of experience working on international issues. Her prior experience at USAID includes serving as the Deputy Director for the Bureau for Management, Office of Management Services; the Division Chief for the former Civil Society, Media, and Labor Division in the DRG Center; and as a Democracy Officer in the Bureau for Asia, the Bureau for the Middle East, and the Bureau for Europe and Eurasia.
From 2015 to 2016, Claire Ehmann was selected as a White House Leadership Development Fellow and spent a year at the Office of Management and Budget, working on federal information technology and data-driven decision making for the Federal Chief Information Officer. Claire has extensive experience working on international development policy and programs, research and evaluation, and developing public-private partnerships.
Claire Ehmann has a graduate degree in international public affairs from the School for Public and International Affairs at Princeton University, was a Fulbright Scholar in Burkina Faso, and has a Bachelor of Arts Degree from the College of William and Mary.
