Rick Somarriba serves as Deputy Assistant Administrator in the Bureau for Inclusive Growth, Partnerships, and Innovation, overseeing USAID’s Private Sector Engagement Hub and the Center for Economics and Market Development. His global portfolio includes trade and investment, finance, economic resilience, and private sector engagement and partnerships.
Rick most recently served as the Director of the Feed the Future (FTF) Office of Country Implementation, where he oversaw the Bureau for Resilience, Environment, and Food Security’s technical assistance and support to FTF countries worldwide. Previously, he was the Director of the Asia Bureau’s Office of Technical Services, overseeing the provision of technical services in support of the bureau’s development assistance programs across Asia. As Deputy Mission Director for USAID/Uganda, including one year as Acting Mission Director, he was responsible for the overall strategic, programmatic, and administrative management of the mission. He also served as Senior Investment Officer in Colombia, where he negotiated and managed credit guarantee programs with private financial institutions to increase finance to underserved markets. Since joining USAID in 2005, Rick has also served in overseas assignments in Cairo, Baghdad, Kabul, Belgrade, and Jerusalem.
Prior to joining USAID, Rick worked in business as a Certified Public Accountant in the areas of financial consulting, accounting and auditing. Rick earned his BS from the University of Michigan in Cellular and Molecular Biology and holds an MBA and MS in Accounting from Northeastern University.
