Press Release

Istanbul, Türkiye - The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark (MFA) and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) announced a two-year partnership aimed at supporting the Syria Civil Defence’s (“White Helmets”) life-saving activities in northwest Syria and building the capacity of the organization to respond to future needs.

Through the agreement, the MFA committed 20 million Danish Kroner ($2.8 million in U.S. dollars) in annual funding to USAID’s Strengthening Community Resilience program, implemented by the White Helmets. This financial contribution will support the White Helmets’ life-saving efforts, which have provided essential emergency response and medical aid to civilians affected by the conflict in Syria.

The partnership between Denmark and USAID underscores a shared commitment to alleviate the suffering of innocent civilians caught in the midst of ongoing conflict in Syria, and leverages the resources of both countries to ensure that life-saving assistance reaches those who need it most in northwest Syria.

“We are proud to partner with USAID in supporting the invaluable work of the White Helmets,” said Louise Auken Wagner, MENA Director at the Danish MFA. “This partnership reflects Denmark’s strong commitment to inclusive peace and stability and to those affected by the conflict in Syria.”

USAID/Syria Senior Development Advisor Sonila Hysi conveyed appreciation to the Danish government for its partnership in supporting the Syrian people. “We’re grateful for the support of our Danish colleagues whose assistance will help the White Helmets bring hope to a population grappling with the aftermath of the 2023 earthquake and ongoing military assaults. We hope this will be the first of many partnerships that will benefit Syrians,” said Hysi.

The funding provided by the Danish MFA will enhance USAID’s support to the White Helmets, ensuring that they can carry out their life-saving work for the people of northwest Syria.
