OVERVIEW

USAID End Tuberculosis (TB) Tajikistan Activity (Activity) is supporting the National TB Program (NTP) to adopt new and innovative approaches and tools across the continuum of TB diagnosis, treatment, and prevention.

The Activity is funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and implemented by FHI 360 to advance evidence-based solutions to increase early TB detection, improve treatment access and cure, and halt the cycle of transmission to prevent TB and drug-resistant TB. To achieve these overarching aims, the Activity is implementing a locally led, people-and community-centered care model to reach every person with TB. This approach is enhanced using digital technology and strategic innovations to improve TB systems and services. This five-year Activity will reach all health system levels to support the Government of Tajikistan’s goal to end TB.

ACTIVITY OBJECTIVES

  • REACH: Maximize the detection of all forms of TB in all individuals of all ages. 
  • CURE: Ensure that all individuals diagnosed with TB to complete treatment and be cured. 
  • PREVENT: Stop the spread of new TB infections and progression from infection to active TB disease. Photo: FHI 360 
  • INNOVATE: Introduce innovative approaches in TB prevention, diagnosis, treatment monitoring and case management. 
  • SUSTAIN: Build country-owned TB systems, led by local partners, that accelerate progress and support pandemic preparedness.

RESULTS ACHIEVED:

  • The National TB Care Guidebook improved according to USAID and WHO recommendations. 
  • USAID TB Data, Impact Assessment and Communications Hub Tuberculosis Contact Investigation Strategy revised and implemented by state health facilities and community organizations at the national level. 
  • TB Laboratories equipped with updated and new Standard Operating Procedures are improving TB quality and timely diagnosis. 
  • Innovative TB testing techniques such as Simple One Step GeneXpert TB Stool Testing introduced country wide. 
  • National TB Program (NTP) technical IT capacities to collect and verify real-time data are improved through assessment and re-strengthened internet connectivity and regular IT support to TB facilities and Labs countrywide. 
  • Increased TB awareness to motivate people to receive TB tests and support TB patients by distributing 13,700 copies of educational materials, posting six TB-focused and advocacy videocasts on social media platforms and dissemination of QR codes linked to online TB self-screening from the NTP with the contacts of all TB centers in the country. 
  • Enhanced access for people on treatment to social care and support through the development Patient Needs Assessment tool to assess the social needs of people affected by TB and scale up of implementation of the “Result-Based Sponsorship Model” engaging religious leaders to provide addressed social support to 106 TB patients in the Khatlon and Sughd regions, as well as Dushanbe city.

AREAS OF COVERAGE: Technical assistance is being provided nationwide at national and community levels to the National TB Program, primary health care, penitentiary system, and civil society organizations.
