Press Release

Zanzibar – Today, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and second Vice-President of the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar, Hemed Suleiman Abdulla, launched the School Information System (SIS) boosting the Ministry of Education’s capacity to improve learning outcomes in pre-primary and primary schools. SIS will provide real-time data from schools, local areas, districts, and regions to the Ministry headquarters, and inform decision-making at all levels.

Provided through the USAID Jifunze Uelewe (Learn to Understand) project, the School Information System (SIS) is part of a TSH 104 billion (USD 38.5 million) partnership to improve learning outcomes of pre-primary to standard four students in Zanzibar, and four regions of Mainland Tanzania: Iringa, Morogoro, Mtwara, and Ruvuma.

“The system now integrates real time data across departments, supporting both academic and administrative decision-making,” said USAID/Tanzania Mission Director Craig Hart.  “Accurate data is essential for better policies, fair resource allocation, and equitable service delivery. That's why the SIS is so important.”

The School Information System is a holistic system that transforms the process of education data collection from a paper-based system to an electronic data collection system using electronic tablets. By doing so, it improves and streamlines the process, making it more efficient and quicker, which will improve the accuracy and efficiency of the management of education in Zanzibar.

In partnership with the Ministries of Education in Tanzania and Zanzibar, and the President’s Office-Regional Administration and Local Government, USAID Jifunze Uelewe is enhancing education for over 1.4 million pre-primary and early grade students in four mainland regions and Zanzibar.
