Wildlife farming is a long-standing practice in Vietnam. These farms play a role in the expanding illegal trade in protected species, and increase threats related to the spread of zoonotic diseases. For the past two months, USAID conducted risk screening and communications workshops for 160 licensed wildlife farms in Quang Nam, Thua Thien Hue, Lam Dong, and Dong Nai provinces to improve their knowledge and understanding of laws and regulations on wildlife protection, and call for their action to help stop the consumption of illegal wildlife products. So far, 50 wildlife farm owners have signed a pledge committing to “no illegal wildlife trade and consumption.”

This USAID support helps to build awareness among communities of the damaging impacts of the illegal wildlife trade. These efforts reduce demand for illegal wildlife products, and prevent the spread of disease from wildlife to humans. [Biodiversity Conservation project]
