Many wildlife species, including the white-cheeked gibbon, in Vietnam are on the verge of extinction due to illegal hunting and habitat loss. A USAID funded Species Conservation Fund, a financial mechanism designed to support the protection and preservation of endangered or threatened species, was recently completed to conduct a study on the critically endangered white-cheeked gibbon in Vu Quang National Park. The park is one of the most significant of four areas in Vietnam recognized for the conservation of this species.
This fund is being implemented by the Center for Nature Conservation and Development, a Vietnamese NGO that focuses on biodiversity conservation and sustainable development, highlighting that partnering with local organizations is essential to ensure sustainable conservation outcomes.
