With USAID support, Vietnam’s Plastic and Health Action Partnership (PHA) was established in 2021 to garner the participation of all related stakeholders in order to boost collaboration, exchange of knowledge and good practices around plastics pollution challenges. On July 31, USAID helped launch the PHA Health Committee, a key coordinating unit comprised of representatives from local organizations, the private sector, and hospitals. The committee will lead research and increase public awareness about the impact of plastic pollution on human health. The committee will also foster collaboration among stakeholders in the healthcare industry, creating a platform for sustainable management of medical plastic waste, building on the expertise of key stakeholders including hospital leaders, scientists, environmental professionals, medical equipment and supplies producers, plastic collectors and recyclers.
Through this support to PHA, USAID helps improve information sharing and learning on best practices in medical plastic waste management, and enhance policy development and implementation, building opportunities for a circular economy, and minimizing the negative impacts of medical plastic waste on the environment and health, and ensuring a cleaner and healthier future for Vietnam.
