Businesses that link customers to a wide range of services and products through online platforms, such as e-commerce, social media, or ride-hailing apps, can have a dominant position in the market leading to unfair competition. From July 29-31, USAID and the U.S. Federal Trade Commission held a three-day workshop to strengthen the ability of Vietnam’s Ministry of Industry and Trade’s Competition Commission and E-Commerce Department to investigate and regulate unfair competition by this type of business. The workshop used hypothetical cases to explain the rules and procedures for conducting investigations, developing evidence through interviews, presenting arguments, proposing remedies, and preparing internal reports. So what? Given the central role of this business model in the digital economy, USAID’s work contributes to fair competition, safeguards innovation, and protects consumer welfare in Vietnam.
