Press Release
Birzeit, 17 July 2024 The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Mission Director officially launched the Basic Education Activity (BEA) during the "STEAM Summer Adventure" camp.
The USAID-funded Basic Education Activity (BEA) works closely with local organizations, experts, and non-governmental service providers to expand access to and quality of early childhood education opportunities and after-school remedial and enrichment activities. This five-year, $49 million activity enhances the quality and inclusivity of education for Palestinian children from Kindergarten through Grade 6. Prioritizing support to the most marginalized and vulnerable children, BEA integrates ongoing social-emotional support for children, parents, and teachers affected by the conflict. It also provides critical support to children with disabilities.
This summer camp initiative, the 'STEAM Summer Adventure,' is designed to enhance students' overall development through innovative educational experiences. The camps focus on key environmental issues, with sub-themes centered on sustainable living, renewable energy, and social-emotional learning components. These components, including communication skills, critical thinking, and self-awareness, will be integrated into the camp's activities, making it a unique and enriching experience.
With a focus on children in grades 4 through 6 throughout the West Bank, the 'STEAM Summer Adventure' is a large-scale initiative. This summer, 10 summer camps will be running simultaneously across selected communities. Each camp will host 200 students and involve approximately 30 facilitators and volunteers.
"USAID supports access to quality education around the world. I am pleased to launch this activity that will provide transformational experiences and remedial learning for children and youth, and fuel their curiosity about learning the sciences." - Amy Tohill-Stull, USAID Mission Director.
The participation of the USAID Mission Director in this launch event underscores the agency's strong commitment to supporting educational initiatives that foster sustainable development and build future leaders in the West Bank.
