Through the Asia Investigative Reporting (AIR) Network, USAID will leverage experience supporting successful locally-led journalism network models in Europe and Eurasia as well as in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Networks for Peace

Identity-based violence and hate speech are on the rise in South and Southeast Asia. Yet actors working to address these issues often do so in isolation and/or lack support to magnify their impact. Networks for Peace uses its regional convening power to collectively engage and support civil society organizations (CSOs) and key influencers in advancing understanding and peaceful coexistence to mitigate growing polarization of ethnic and religious identities across the region. Working with partners in Burma, Cambodia, Lao PDR, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and the Tibetan community in exile in India, Networks for Peace fosters intra- and interfaith harmony and social cohesion through grants, capacity building, research, and regional knowledge sharing.

Anti-Malarial Drug Resistance Monitoring and Response

Body
The Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS), comprising Burma, Cambodia, Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Thailand, and Vietnam, has long been the epicenter of antimalarial drug resistance.  Since 2000, USAID has supported the monitoring of antimalarial drug resistance in the GMS to protect the efficacy of existing treatments and alternative drugs for malaria.  This regional program is critical to bolstering surveillance systems to detect and respond to drug resistance and enables GMS countries to achieve greater development outcomes.

Combating Antimicrobial Resistance in the Asia-Pacific

The Global Health Supply Chain - Procurement and Supply Management

The Global Health Supply Chain - Procurement and Supply Management (GHSC-PSM) activity supports the Thai and Laotian Ministries of Health and malaria partners in the procurement, supply chain management, and monitoring and reporting of malaria commodities, such as long-lasting insecticide treated nets, artemisinin-based combination therapies, and malaria rapid diagnostic tests.  Through this program, USAID enables Thailand and Laos to become more self-reliant in managing malaria commodities through domestic resources, and to achieve their goals of eliminating malaria by 2024 and 2030, respectively.

Countries in Asia continue to face challenges controlling the spread of infectious diseases that cross national borders, including HIV, emerging pandemic threats, and malaria. The USAID Regional Development Mission for Asia (RDMA) addresses these challenges through strengthening bilateral and regional partnerships, advising on best practices, providing technical assistance, and enhancing policy harmonization to improve regional responses to health threats.
