USAID’s HIV/AIDS Prevention, Care, and Treatment programming provides a combination of medical and technical leadership and expertise to support PEPFAR goals. Our work includes:
Delivering clinical and program expertise for quality HIV/AIDS services.
Designing and maintaining HIV/AIDS service delivery programs and platforms with local partners.
Analyzing key medical, social science, and programmatic data for up to date, effective, high impact HIV/AIDS service implementation.
Advancing the medical and scientific knowledge base for HIV prevention, care and treatment that will bring us closer to HIV epidemic control.
Applying social and behavior change and behavioral science approaches to programmatic barriers and challenges to improve outcomes along the HIV continuum.
Supporting the introduction and scale up of new products and technologies that advance HIV prevention, care and treatment,
Developing integrated, patient-centered care service delivery models to address other common health care needs (primary health care, non-communicable diseases, family planning, STI and co-infection treatment, etc.) for clients supported through USAID programs.
Creating and sustaining strategic partnerships to expand, improve, and maintain HIV prevention, care, and treatment services.
Providing global leadership for HIV/AIDS prevention, care, and treatment policy and guidance.
USAID's Work With HIV Prevention, Care, and Treatment Includes:
Tuberculosis and HIV
USAID leads the U.S. Governments global TB efforts, working with agencies and partners around the world to reach every person with TB, cure those in need of treatment, prevent the spread of new infections, and stop the progression to active TB disease.
Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP)
USAID's investments, through PEPFAR, support innovative programming that ensures person-centered access to quality PrEP services.
Differentiated Service Delivery (DSD)
USAID, through PEPFAR, provides differentiated service delivery (DSD); a client-centered approach that simplifies and adapts HIV services across the cascade to reflect the preferences, expectations and needs of people living with and affected by HIV.
Voluntary Medical Male Circumcision
USAID's investments in voluntary medical male circumcision can offer men substantial lifelong partial protection against HIV and a number of other sexually transmitted diseases, and reduce the risk of penile cancer and cervical cancer in female partners of circumcised men.
Family Planning and HIV
USAID's investments in HIV and family planning aim to ensure that all women, men, and youth living with HIV have access to sexual and reproductive health services that can significantly reduce unplanned pregnancies, maternal deaths, and new pediatric HIV infections.
Preventing Vertical Transmission (PVT)
USAID's investments in providing care and support for women living with HIV during pregnancy, delivery, and the postpartum period help to achieve the goal of ending preventable child and maternal deaths. Since 2003, USAID support has enabled 3.3 million babies to be born HIV-free to mothers living with HIV.
Pediatric and Adolescent Populations
USAID's investments in pediatric and adolescent populations help identify children, adolescents, and youth at risk for HIV and ensure access and support along each step of the clinical cascade, including HIV testing, timely enrollment in life-saving ART, and continuity of treatment support.
Social and Behavioral Change
Social and behavior change is an approach that uses evidence to create and maintain changes in behavior, norms, and the environment. These changes are crucial to the success of the HIV response across prevention, testing, care, and treatment.
Treatment Growth, Continuity of Treatment, and Viral Load Suppression (VLS)
USAID's investments in treatment growth, continuity of treatment, and viral load suppression support comprehensive life-saving antiretroviral therapy (ART) programs around the globe to ensure those who need it have access to treatment and can achieve optimal health outcomes and a high quality of life.
Condoms
Condoms and personal lubricants play an important role within USAID's HIV prevention, care, and treatment efforts, and their promotion and distribution are most effective when integrated with other services as part of an informed choice and client-centered approach to prevention.
HIV Testing Services
USAID's investments in HIV testing services as the first step in the clinical cascade ensure that people living with HIV are diagnosed and linked to treatment and care.
Cervical Cancer Screening and Treatment
USAID plays a key role increasing access to cervical cancer screening and preventive treatment for women living with HIV.
