The compounded effects of climatic shocks, conflict, and related displacement continue to generate high levels of humanitarian need across Ethiopia, with more than 21 million people in need of humanitarian aid in 2024, according to the UN. Several years of drought and conflict in Ethiopia in addition to disease outbreaks, high food prices, intercommunal conflict, and seasonal flooding have contributed to elevated needs across the country.
USAID supports partners to address critical humanitarian needs of populations affected by conflict and climatic shock—including drought and floods—across Ethiopia. In total, USAID provided nearly $757 million for emergency interventions in Fiscal Year (FY) 2023—including nearly $352 million in funding for the northern Ethiopia complex emergency response—and continues to provide multi-sector assistance throughout the country. Additionally, USAID provided nearly $107 million for early recovery, risk reduction, and resilience activities during FY 2023. USAID/BHA funding supports agriculture, food, health, livelihood, multipurpose cash, nutrition, protection, shelter, and water, sanitation, and hygiene, and other sector assistance across the country.
