Indonesia and United States Sign Memorandum of Understanding to Support Forest and Other Land Use Net Sink 2030 Goals

JAKARTA—Today, Indonesia, through the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (MoEF), and the United States, through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), agreed to work in partnership on the Government of Indonesia’s long-term vision for climate-resilient, low-emission development.

A memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed by MoEF Secretary General Dr. Bambang Hendroyono and USAID Mission Director Jeff Cohen, at a ceremony witnessed by Indonesian Environment and Forestry Minister Siti Nurbaya and U.S. Ambassador to Indonesia, Sung Y. Kim, outlines the collaboration to reduce emissions in line with the Government of Indonesia’s Forestry and Land Use Net Sink 2030 Operational Plan and USAID’s 2022-2030 Climate Strategy.

“Through this MOU, we are pleased to deepen our partnership with the Government of Indonesia to address the challenges of climate change by supporting the MoEF’s leadership on sustainable land use and protecting valuable forests across the country that are so vital for Indonesia’s prosperous, resilient, green future,” said USAID Mission Director Jeff Cohen.

Among the activities envisioned under the MOU, MoEF and USAID plan to partner to support ongoing reduced deforestation and forest degradation; sustainable forest management, including tree planting and land rehabilitation; management and restoration of peatlands and mangroves to limit greenhouse gas emissions; and Indonesia’s efforts in conservation and biodiversity, including protection for flagship species, such as orangutans.

To support MoEF’s goals, USAID will coordinate closely with the Government of Indonesia at all levels and with local, national, and international stakeholders. MoEF and USAID intend to share information and exchange knowledge, develop and implement joint projects, and collaborate on activities and research. Subject to legal and financial requirements, MoEF and USAID are eager to detail their proposed projects and activities in a new grant implementation agreement to further deepen their partnership.
