Administrator Power arrived in Yerevan, Armenia on September 25 to reaffirm the U.S. government’s partnership with the people of Armenia; underscore the United States’ commitment to Armenia’s sovereignty, independence, territorial integrity, and democracy; and to hear from those impacted by the humanitarian crisis in Nagorno-Karabakh. Administrator Power was joined by U.S. Department of State Acting Assistant Secretary of Europe and Eurasian Affairs Yuri Kim.
The Administrator began her visit at the the Armenian Genocide Memorial where she paid her respects to those who were killed.
She then met with Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, where they discussed the United States’ strong partnership with Armenia’s reformist government and the U.S. commitment to deepen the U.S.-Armenia relationship. Administrator Power expressed support for the leadership of Prime Minister Pashinyan in advancing the democratic reforms the people of Armenia have called for and for working to build broad based economic prosperity and resilience. The Prime Minister and the Administrator discussed the humanitarian situation in Nagorno-Karabakh, how the U.S. can support ethnic Armenians still in Nagorno-Karabakh, and plans to address the needs of the thousands of displaced ethnic Armenians already inside Armenia and the thousands traveling toward Armenia.
The Administrator then attended a roundtable with representatives from key Government of Armenia ministries to assess their needs after Azerbaijan’s attack on Nagorno-Karabakh and to discuss long term collaboration with the Ministers to support Armenia’s democracy and economy.
Administrator Power concluded her day with a conversation with key international and NGO partners working to address the humanitarian crisis inside Nagorno-Karabakh and the growing needs of those who choose to leave for Armenia.
