Dushanbe, Tajikistan, April 14, 2023 – The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) inaugurated a rehabilitated pump station of the water system in Zainabobod rural municipality of the Rudaki district that provides more than 6,700 people with safe drinking water. This is one of 12 rural communities that the USAID Rural Water Supply (RWS) activity is supporting to increase equitable access to safe drinking water for rural people in unserved and underserved communities in Tajikistan.
To ensure the project’s sustainability, the USAID RWS activity will support the Rudaki district water operator’s capacity to develop a sound business plan for the water system development, introduce an electronic billing system, and assist in the installation of water meters in households.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, the U.S. Ambassador to Tajikistan Manuel Micaller, noted, “The U.S. Government believes that everyone has the right to clean drinking water. USAID strives to increase access to safe drinking water across all regions of Tajikistan. USAID’s commitment to elevating drinking water access issues are of critical importance to protecting public health, dignity, equity, and our environment.”
In the last five years, through RWS and other projects, USAID has rehabilitated and constructed 25 drinking water supply systems throughout the country providing more than 80,000 people with safe drinking water.
