Sughd, Tajikistan, November 30, 2022 – The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) inaugurated a rehabilitated rural drinking water system in Sumchak village of B. Gafurov district. The rehabilitated water system provides 5,800 people, from more than 668 households, along with a local school, kindergarten, and medical facility with safe drinking water in Sumchak village.
Previously, the USAID’s Rural Water Supply (RWS) Activity has rehabilitated the drinking water supply systems in Chorbogh village of the A. Jomi district in Khatlon. Now with this new system, in Sumchak village of the B. Ghafurov district in Sughd, the Activity is providing a total of 9,200 people with access to clean drinking water. Previously, these residents had to suffer from consuming unsafe water. Overall, the project plans to construct or rehabilitate 12 water supply systems that will serve more than 45,000 people.
USAID partners with local governments, communities, and businesses to develop and improve safe drinking water infrastructure and services in Tajikistan. The drinking water system in Sumchak village was designed using a new decentralized drinking water management model. The system will be transferred from the local municipality to the local public organization operating and collecting water fees from the residents. This can be replicated across other regions, also in the form of public private partnerships with local entrepreneurs.
