Increasing Youth Civic Engagement and Economic Empowerment
BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES
Ma3an's program goal is to increase Tunisian youth civic engagement and economic empowerment and works towards the following objectives: (1) Youth have improved access to skills, services, and opportunities for civic engagement and economic empowerment, and (2) Tunisian youth lead and meaningfully participate in activities to address youth and community priorities.
In its first four years, Ma3an has built a strong foundation of youth leaders, safe spaces, and local partners that have collaborated to respond to youth priorities in 33 communities across 15 governorates. The program will continue to support local partners to engage youth and key stakeholders at the governorate and regional levels.
ACTIVITIES
Community-level Interventions:
- Building a Youth Leader Network across 15 governorates that provides youth with increased access to skills building opportunities, services, and programs related to civic engagement and economic empowerment.
- Supporting existing youth safe spaces by enhancing their capacities and improving their Youth Economic Empowerment related offerings.
National-level Interventions:
- Supporting the Ministry of Education to revise the civic education curriculum in preparatory and secondary schools to reflect Tunisia's democratic institutions and norms.
- Adapt and apply a Youth Community Service program in school and civic education clubs to support young Tunisians to gain civic knowledge, values, and skills by applying them on a community problem.

ACHIEVEMENTS
- Refurbishing and equipping over 40 'safe spaces' (in youth, cultural, sports and urban centers) by 2022 which provide an additional 10,000 underserved youth with opportunities and services (Value: $3,798,222).
- Supporting local partners to facilitate over 50 community-based dialogue and action planning forums that brought together youth and community stakeholders to design locally led solutions to priorities they have identified.
- Supporting the National Counter-Terrorism Commission (CNLCT) to validate the national strategy for preventing and countering violent extremism and enhancing the capacities of 48 CNLCT Local Representatives to strengthen their collaboration with civil society partners and youth.
