Managing plastic waste and protecting water resources remains a challenge for many local municipalities in Vietnam. On April 17, officials from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment and Hanoi City, local authorities, representatives of diplomatic missions in Vietnam, USAID, private sector companies, and the local community gathered for an Earth Day Celebration in Hanoi’s historical center, Hoan Kiem. Organized by the Vietnam Water Conservation Network, an association supported by USAID’s Collective Action for Water Conservation project, the event called for collective action from multiple stakeholders (business, government, youth, women, media, and international partners) on water pollution control and waste recycling. During the event, partners from the government, the private sector, and local organizations signed a cooperation agreement to build a circular-economy model in Vietnam in promotion of plastic waste recycling in Hoan Kiem.

USAID supports local capacity development and locally-driven initiatives to reduce environmental pollution, and the Government of Vietnam’s improved commitment and investment to achieve its pollution reduction and environmental protection priorities.
