Vietnamese enterprises that have high emissions, such as those in the steel and aluminum industries, are now required to set reduction targets, disclose their emissions, and engage with suppliers and customers to do the same. On August 20 and 23, USAID, in partnership with Vietnam’s Ministry of Industry and Trade (MOIT), hosted two workshops in Hanoi and Vung Tau for MOIT staff on monitoring and reporting greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The training focused on creating a national plan for measuring, reporting, and verifying emissions, as well as developing GHG inventories (an accounting of all greenhouse gasses emitted or removed over a specific period) in the industrial and trade sectors. These steps are essential for establishing emissions baselines and prioritizing mitigation strategies.
Effective emissions reduction plans enable companies to systematically track and reduce their emissions in a cost-effective manner. This work lays the groundwork for Vietnam’s planned carbon market and is a critical move toward achieving the nation’s ambitious goal of net-zero emissions by 2050.
