Eighty-five young education innovators from 14 countries in East and Central Africa are the latest “Education Changemakers” YALI alumni thanks to a partnership with the Trevor Noah Foundation (TNF).
Building upon a successful partnership with the YALI Southern Africa RLC, the TNF extended the reach of the Education ChangeMakers program to USAID’s YALI RLC in East and Central Africa. TNF signed an agreement with the RLC, committing $235,000 that supported the training of these emerging young leaders within the education sector.
The Microsoft African Development Center (ADC) delivered a Technology in Education module during this training on how technology can enhance teaching and learning, empower educators, and equip students for the future. It also explored innovative solutions to challenges within the education sector using Microsoft's tools and platforms. Participants had the opportunity to acquire in-demand technical skills such as coding, data analysis, generative AI applications, and digital marketing, unlocking new pathways for economic growth.
The participants also engaged in a grant challenge and 10 winning ideas received $5,000 each to implement their education projects in the education sector, such as Fathia Mohamed Houssein, an inspiring English teacher from Djibouti, who is working to address education challenges in rural areas. As alumni of YALI, all participants of the cohort will have more opportunities to apply for small grants to implement education-focused initiatives in their institutions and communities.
With the addition of this year’s Education Changemakers in Nairobi, the YALI program has graduated 219 education innovators from both East and Southern Africa.
