July 10, 2023, Ashgabat, Turkmenistan -- Today, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) concluded a two-day seminar on international parliamentary practices for 27 newly-elected members of the 7th convocation of Turkmenistan Parliament – the Mejlis. The seminar, organized by USAID’s Governance Support Program (GSP), introduced the members of Parliament (MPs) to best practices in lawmaking and showcased efficient processes of parliamentary chambers around the globe. The seminar focused on approaches to assess the effectiveness of specific activities of legislative and representative bodies in Turkmenistan. It also covered proven methods MPs can use to improve results, including how to use digital technologies in lawmaking processes.
USAID successfully partners with the Turkmenistan Mejlis to strengthen capacities of Turkmen legislators for effective lawmaking and enhanced international cooperation. In 2022, USAID hosted a three-week training for MPs on effective diplomacy in the 21st century, focusing on how to identify and cultivate diplomatic opportunities through inter-parliamentary routes.
In addition to this introductory seminar for the new Turkmen MPs, USAID will continue the partnership with the Mejlis to further enhance effective governance practices for the growth and stability in the region. USAID will facilitate knowledge sharing between Turkmenistan MPs and U.S. Congressional representatives by organizing visits and meetings.
