Persons with disabilities often face significant barriers to independence and participation, and the ultimate goal of USAID’s Advancing Medical Care and Rehabilitation Education activity is to reduce these barriers and increase independence.  Home modifications, to improve physical access and safety, provide key support for persons with disabilities. Using simple, locally-made and affordable solutions, USAID helped 40 families of persons with disabilities modify kitchens, toilets, bathrooms and home workstations to become accessible and convenient, increasing confidence and self-reliance in persons with disabilities and reducing the burden on their caregivers. Additionally a comprehensive needs assessment tool for home accessibility was provided to rehabilitation practitioners and family members to encourage accessibility efforts.

USAID’s support to persons with disabilities increases independence and social participation and enables persons with disabilities to develop their skills, abilities and talents as contributing members of the community.
