On September 16, USAID joined leaders of the Vietnam Union of Science and Technology to launch two new projects to counter wildlife trafficking and reduce illegal wildlife consumption by supporting national parks/protected areas to protect their biodiversity through training staff and applying technology. The activities will also raise awareness among the public. These projects, worth more than $2 million in total, will be implemented by Save Vietnam’s Wildlife and the Centre for Nature Conservation and Development.
These projects represent USAID’s first in countering wildlife trafficking to be directly awarded to local organizations in Vietnam, fostering sustainable results through local ownership. Since 2016, USAID has provided $27.8 million to Vietnam in support of efforts to counter wildlife trafficking, including strengthening law enforcement, synchronizing regulations, reducing demand, and building international cooperation.
